Protected plants in Vorarlberg
(in accordance with the regulations of the State Government for the implementation of the law on environmental protection and landscape development – environmental protection regulations)
In Vorarlberg wild plants may not be abused, damaged or destroyed. Abuse is constituted by anything going beyond reasonable use for one's personal, private requirements. Reasonable means that the environment or other uses of the environment are not substantially impaired. Uses within the framework of organised collection campaigns or for commercial purposes are also forbidden.
Mushrooms may only be picked between 8.00 and 17.00 hrs up to a quantity of 2 kg / person / day. Only those mushrooms may be picked which the collector has first identified as edible.
Gentian roots may only be taken from half of the plants of one type spread equally over the collection area. In addition to this, the written permission of the land owner must also be carried stating the collection area and the time of collection.
All of the illustrated plants have full protection. They may not be picked or otherwise damaged. In addition to this, all types of the following genera are fully protected:
- Columbine (Aquilegia)
- Bur reed (Sparganium)
- orchids (Orchidaceae)
- Cat's tail (Typha)
- Iris (Iris)
- Sundew (Drosera)
- Grape hyacinth (Muscari)
Protection of natural habitat
For the protection of the habitats of threatened animals and plants the following applies:
- Reed banks and herbaceous covering may not be burned off.
- In the period from 15 March to 30 September hedgerows and reed banks may not be cut outside of built-up areas.
- Herbicides may not be used on meadows except to kill individual plants.
- When spreading fertilizer, sufficient distance must be maintained from waterways, their natural shore vegetation, moors, natural meadows, hedgerows, forests and drystone walls to avoid damaging these.
- All citizens are required to behave in an environmentally-conscious manner. Care must be taken to protect nature, animals and the countryside, particularly during leisure activities. This applies particularly to our largely undisturbed landscapes and sensitive habitats.
- The dumping of refuse in the countryside is prohibited.
Environmental management officers, woodland managers, authorities responsible for the maintenance of the closed hunting season, fisheries inspectors and nature conservation officers of the districtl authorities provide advice, monitor compliance with statutory regulations and report on any violations.
