Animal breeding
Animal husbandry is a key element of Vorarlberg agriculture. Animal husbandry is almost the only means available for the exploitation of grasslands and alpine pastures for food production. Of the total production value of agricultural goods and services, approximately two thirds are attributable to the animal sector.
Milk production and alpine dairy farming
In 2004, Vorarlberg produced some 147 million kilograms of milk. A proportion of production is sold directly from the farm, or used in-house. Approximately 121 million kilograms, including some 75 million kilograms from silo-free production, account for 4.3 percent of the total milk supplied in Austria. 32 of Austria’s 99 creameries and alpine dairy farms are located in Vorarlberg. Well over 100 of Vorarlberg’s alpine dairies also produce cheese. Alpine and mountain cheeses, which are EU products of designated origin, are the leading products of domestic milk production.
